6. John Lathrop

Clergyman in England.
Settled Barnstable, Barnstable, Massachusetts.
Proponent of the idea of the separation of church and State.
Attended Queen's College, Cambridge, & Matriculated 1601, graduated with a BA in 1605 and with an MA in 1609.
Appointed Curate of the local parish of Egerton, Kent, England.
1624 was called to replace Henry Jacob as pastor of the First Independent Church in London.
Jailed in the Clink or Newgate Prison for failure to take the oath of loyalty to the established church 1632-May 1634.
While in Prison, his wife Hannah House became ill and died.  HIs 6 children were left to fend for themselves for bread begging on the streets of London.
Released from prison in May 1634 on condition that he would remove immediately to the new world.
Sailed on the ship "Griffin" to Boston, arriving 18 Sep 1834.  Located to Scituate within a few days of arriving in Boston.
